Celebrate Independence Day Differently

Independence Day

This year, on 15th of August we celebrate our 72nd Independence Day with pride. On this day, we Indians start feeling patriotic and emotional remembering the struggle that our freedom fighters went through to attain freedom. People from every nook and cranny irrespective of their ethnicities, religion or caste come together to celebrate this day.

Independence Day is celebrated with great pomp throughout the country. The national flag is unfurled in many schools and colleges. We also see many apartments hoisting the National Flag and celebrating in the form of fancy dress competition, stalls and sweets. Different brands across the country come up with “freedom sales” sometimes also matching the number of years since Independence. Many of us also love to watch the traditional Prime Minister’s speech given at the Red Fort in New Delhi on our television sets. Basically, the idea is to unite as Indians and for many of us, we are just glad that we have a holiday!

However, over the years we have seen the youth of India coming up with some different ways to celebrate this day. Some celebrate it by delivering speeches in their colonies, while some celebrate it by organizing puppet shows portraying the freedom movement and by also filming some patriotic movies on big screens and open theatres. These are great ways of educating the youngsters about our freedom but isn’t patriotism also about the love for our land? Why have we only been concentrating on the past? Shouldn’t we all also think of some ways in which we can preserve our land for the future generations to see?

Every year we participate in unfurling the National Flag but very few of us understand the true meaning of it. The Saffron color in the Indian flag indicates the strength and courage of the country, the white is a symbol of peace, the Chakra signifies truth and Green stands for fertility, growth and auspiciousness of the land. So, if we resonate, we have only been symbolizing the Saffron color and to some extent the White color of the Indian National Flag in our celebrations. The Government has been taking measures to maintain peaceful relations with neighboring countries as well. Hence, we are left with depiction of the green color of our flag. India was known to be a self – sufficient country. The country once took pride in calling itself an agricultural land which is now being converted to barren jungles. Most of us have also seen our grandparents specify the significance of keeping plants such as Tulsi at home. Our ancestral homes have spaces outside for gardens and they took time out to care for these plants. However, with time, things have changed to a great extent. People are so busy making money that they are left with no time. All we do for entertainment is sit on our lavish sofas and watch a movie on Netflix or go out for dinner to a fine dining restaurant.

This year we urge you to plant a tree or bring home a nice houseplant to celebrate Independence Day. Let’s go green by nurturing a plant and taking time out caring for it rather than going green by just purchasing and consuming organic products. Spend time with plants or grow a garden and you will know how relaxing it can be. Plants not only provide us with oxygen and fruits but also help in relieving stress. Nurture the land you were born on this Independence Day.
