Tips to care for your plants during monsoon

The monsoon season has arrived across India. Though this is the best season for potting and planting as low temperatures and humid climate help in inducing the roots to grow, the onset of monsoon brings about a huge change in the climate from hot to humid to breezy and cold in various parts of India. Monsoon is the most conducive climate to grow indoor plants as plants absorb humidity in the air and also get rid of the excessive sunlight that they were obtaining during the summer season. However, farm owners, nurserymen, and individuals with home gardens and a love for indoor plants need to take special care of their plants during this season. The experts at Florance Flora suggest the following general tips for your farms and gardens during monsoon season:

  1. Water the plants only after checking the beds/pots and planting media for moisture. Very less watering is required during this season.
  2. No watering in the evening hours after 3 pm.
  3. Ensure that the plants do not have any stagnant water.
  4. Look for worms in plant beds. Plants are prone to be infected with worms during this season. However, earthworms are good for plants as they dig holes in the soil that help in aerating the plants and nitrating the soil.
  5. Good ventilation and light are essential during this season as the temperature inside the greenhouse should not become very humid.
  6. Fertilizers should be applied only in the morning hours between 7-11 am.
  7. Plants are prone to pests during the monsoon season. Pesticide and fungicide should be applied once a week to control pests and diseases.
  8. Use perforated sheets instead of plastic sheet to cover plants in your open garden or terrace garden. This will provide a sprinkler watering effect to the garden which is known to be great for the plants.
  9. Prune the plants just before the monsoon season as it aids budding of flowers and overall growth of the plant. In case of flowering plants, when the flowers of the plants start to wither, we recommend you to cut them off from their stem/head. This will not only help in re-growth of flowers but will also increase the length of the flowering season.
  10. Young plants in the farms and gardens should be sheltered properly from rains.
  11. Ensure that the water is not clogged around the plants. For this, mulch can be spread around the plants as they would prevent rain water from staying apart from bringing in additional nutrients.
